'Scrunch Out The Crunch' (SOTC) is a technique to remove the gel cast that forms around your curls in the final styling and drying process. Seasoned curly girls are obsessed with getting the perfect cast as this is the key to perfectly defined curls.
Prep
Cleanse, condition and detangle as you normally would. We recommend the Goji Berry Mint Reviving Hair Rinse or the Hibiscus Pink Cleansing Clay-Wash followed by the Coconut Almond Detangling Conditioner or Quinoa Repair Deep Conditioner if you prefer a protein-based conditioner.
Squish
Before you get out of the shower flip your head over and squish your soaking wet curls upwards. This can be on rinsed hair or apply a small amount of Babassu Quench Leave-In Curl Primer for extra moisture or to aid detangling.
Keep squishing your curls upwards to create fat clumping curls. With your head tilted over, apply the Açaí Berry Fix Defining Gel or Papaya Slip Taming Potion. For wavy or hard to define loose curly hair that need an extra boost of volume try the Bamboo Ginseng Curling Mousse and Bamboo Ginseng Curling Glaze in sections to the curls working your way down to the tip. This method will probably require a little more gel that you normally would use. Encourage curl pattern by scrunching curls upwards.
Scrunch once or twice into a curl towel to accentuate the curl clumps and to remove some of the excess water.
Dry
Now this is when you STOP touching your hair with your fingers. Air dry or diffuse 100%.
SOTC - Scrunch Out The Crunch
Your curls should now feel a bit crispy. This is what you want! This means that each curl is protected in its own cocoon. If your curls are 100% dry then start massaging the scalp with your fingertips to loosen the roots then scrunch through your curls until they are soft and super defined. Using a pea-size amount of Inca Radiance Repairing Elixir or Miracle Maca Moisture Balm during this last step will give a beautifully glossy shine.
