I have been a professional hairdresser for the last six years and worked alongside Matt for 12 months before the opening of Spring. I was fascinated when I used to observe Matt work with curly clients and the beautiful creations that came about. It made me want to become part of that world and be able to make someone feel so happy and confident after their visit to a salon. When I joined Spring my expertise was colour techniques, but as I started to gain confidence in working with curls, I ventured into cutting. Again, it is so different but I love it and am so pleased to be able to offer the whole spectrum of services to my clients.
I love it when clients want something new and different! 😍 these beautiful curls were styled using @trepadoracurltherapy Avocado Kokum Curl Defining Smoothie mixed with Quinoa deep conditioner and then we sealed all the moisture in with Acai berry fixing gel 😍 • • #curl #curlfriends #curllove #curlcrush #curls #curlsforthegirls #curlsrock #curlsfordays #curlsonfleek #curlsgoals #curly #curlyhair #curlyhairdontcare #curlyhairforever #curlyhaircare #curlbycurl #curlycolour #balayage #curlybalayge
Q: What is the colour collaboration process between you and your curly hair clients that help you to create such exquisite results?
A: Curl by curl colour allows me to be creative and free, which gives such brilliant results as no two clients have the same head of curls. Their patterns, shapes and sizes are so different from one another, so to colour every curly client using the exact same technique simply wouldn’t work. I have to listen to what they what but also be honest with them and give them advice and guidance as to what will and won’t work with their specific curl.
The Curl by curl colour method is applied to each curl individually creating a three-dimensional appearance emphasising the curls; We can achieve a natural result or something bolder. This means as a stylist I need to consider everything in the equation, for example, the client's skin tone, their natural hair colour, the curls natural fall and how often the client would ideally like to visit the salon.
The application is so important and needs to be blended and selected perfectly to compliment the curls to ensure the colour grows out without harsh lines similar to using foils – which, let me tell you, doesn’t work for curly hair!
Curl by curl is a very personal method of colouring and I always strive to deliver unique colour to each of my clients at Spring.
Q: Is there one curl transformation that you have done which really stands out for you?
A: One particular client had a lot of root re-growth, bands of different dark colours which were almost black throughout the hair, and foil highlights which were lost in the hair. After 8 1/2 hours a total transformation was performed! Highlights had been blended, tones were even and the dark colour banding removed. It was such a long process for both me and for the client but the transformation was phenomenal, you couldn’t believe the final outcome achieved. The client was so happy with the result and left the salon with healthy hair that looked fantastic. I went home that evening so happy and proud of what we had jointly achieved together that day, and there’s nothing better than that feeling.
Q: What are your main Trepadora picks that you recommend to clients take home to maintain their salon results?
A: I love mixing the Quinoa Repair Deep Conditioner and Avocado Kokum Curl Defining Smoothie together to make a thick paste that gives curls a burst of hydration without leaving the hair feeling heavy or weighed down. It keeps the hair moisturised, especially when using the product at home.
I love the Hibiscus Pink Cleansing Clay-Wash, it’s so refreshing and leaves the hair feeling clean without stripping its natural oils, and the smell is just beautiful.
Q: What is the best thing about working for a salon that is dedicated to curls?
Curly hair is a different form of hairdressing. It makes you think outside the box and you can get more creative. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than a brilliant curly finish. I love working with natural colours, especially the silver/grey spectrum, but equally, I love big, bold colours. I want to bring excitement and uniqueness to all our curly clients and love trying out new techniques such as the ColorMelter.
Q: What has been your most uplifting experience working in Spring Salon?
A: When you really love your job and have a passion for what you do, it feels less like work and more like pleasure. At the end of every service, when the client and myself see what has been created it’s an amazing feeling. Being able to share the happiness the client is feeling when they look at the transformation and fall in love with their curls. It is so uplifting. I have a client who visits the salon around every 9 months and each visit she is as excited and wowed as her very first time at Spring, I am the only stylist who has been allowed to colour her hair. When she first came to me, she was so very nervous about colouring her hair and now she has total confidence in everything I do, the trust she has in me makes me feel great!
